How and when does leather wear?

If quality leather is properly cared for it can last for many decades and form a patina. It is animal skin, so leather must be kept moisturized. Leather can crack and peel if it gets too dry. You should regularly use a leather conditioner or cleaner to keep it moisturized. Also, be aware of the humidity levels in the area as low humidity can lead to leather becoming dry and brittle.

Most times, it is the sealant or finish that is the problem, not the leather. Leather can be damaged if it is cleaned with the wrong products. Even baby wipes can cause damage. They break down the leather and rub off the topcoat.

A poor quality leather, especially bonded, is more susceptible to cracking and peeling. Under normal circumstances and with proper care, leather of high quality shouldn't ever be able to peel.

Bonded Leather is a low-cost alternative to high-quality or top-grain leather. The price of bonded leather is reflective of its durability, value, and is used most often in upholstery. It is made from scraps and recycled leather. The adhesive holds the pieces together before attaching a polyurethane PU (PU) overcoat. Bonded leather isn't as flexible or elastic as real leather. The synthetic PU overcoat can be easily removed once the leather strips reach their stretching point.

Fake leather, also known as bonded leather, can easily peel due to its low quality and scarcity. Fake leather is not as durable as real leather and, just like bonded, can easily crack or peel after just a few months.

You must ensure that your leather remains soft and supple by using the correct products. Qualitative leather doesn't crack or peel, and it actually looks better over time. Lower quality leathers and materials are not as durable and resilient.
